As the November 5th, 2024, general election approaches, it’s crucial for every eligible voter to understand the importance of participating in this democratic process. Your vote directly impacts the future of our community and country, whether you’re casting your ballot for local offices, state referendums, or federal candidates.

The recent LCF Alumni Association Leadership Lunch on election readiness provided valuable insights into how voters can prepare for the upcoming elections, what to expect on the ballot, and the role of the Collier County Office of the Supervisor of Elections in ensuring a smooth voting experience.

Key Takeaways from the Leadership Collier Luncheon

On October 3rd, ALC graduate Robert Bernstein (ALC ‘22), partner at Annesser Armentoros PLLC sponsored the luncheon focused on preparing our community for the upcoming elections. Anne Frazier (LC ’12) moderated the discussion, with Collier County Supervisor of Elections Melissa Blazer (LC’14) providing crucial updates on voter registration, voting methods, and ballot details.

Here’s a breakdown of the most important points:

Three Ways to Vote in Florida

Melissa Blazer emphasized the three primary voting methods available to Florida voters:

  1. Vote by Mail: A convenient option for those who prefer to vote from home. Request your mail-in ballot well before the deadline.
  2. Early Voting: This method allows you to vote in person before Election Day, reducing wait times and providing flexibility.
  3. Election Day Voting: Traditional in-person voting takes place on November 5, 2024. Check your polling location and arrive prepared.
Voter Registration

The voter registration deadline is October 7, 2024. Verify your registration status, especially if you’ve recently moved or changed your name, to avoid surprises on Election Day.

Understanding Your Ballot

This year’s ballot includes significant races and constitutional amendments that require careful consideration. From local school board elections to state-level referendums, voters need to be well-prepared to make informed decisions.

Representatives from the League of Women Voters, Diane Moore and Teresa Stohs (LC’15), discussed several important constitutional amendments:

  • Amendment 1: Whether to implement partisan school board elections.
  • Amendment 2: The right to fish and hunt, a symbolic measure with broader implications.
  • Amendment 3: Legalizing marijuana for adults in Florida.
  • Amendment 4: Abortion access, a critical issue likely to draw significant voter attention.

Each amendment has arguments for and against, which were discussed in detail during the seminar, along with organizations supporting and opposing these measures.

Collier County Public Schools Referendum

Voters will also decide on a tax-neutral referendum for Collier County Public Schools. This measure aims to maintain essential funding for our schools without increasing taxes.

How You Can Prepare

To ensure you’re fully prepared for the November election:

  1. Check Your Voter Registration: Make sure you’re registered and that your information is up to date. Visit https://www.colliervotes.gov/Voters/Check-My-Registration-Status for details.
  2. Request a Mail-In Ballot: If voting by mail, request your ballot early to avoid delays.
  3. Review Your Sample Ballot: Familiarize yourself with the candidates, amendments, and referendums to make the voting process smoother.
  4. Engage in Your Community: The luncheon highlighted the importance of community involvement. Volunteer or attend local events to stay informed about key issues.
Election Integrity and Preparedness

The Collier County Office of the Supervisor of Elections is committed to ensuring a secure, efficient, and transparent election process. With efforts in place to safeguard voting integrity, you can be confident your vote will be counted. The office is taking extra steps to address concerns related to election worker security and ballot drop-off procedures.

Your Voice Matters

Voting is a cornerstone of our democracy. Whether you’re passionate about local school boards, concerned about state amendments, or focused on national elections, your voice matters. Stay informed, understand your ballot, and participate in the voting process to help shape the future of our community and beyond.

Be sure to vote by November 5th, 2024, and take the necessary steps to ensure your participation in this pivotal election. Together, we can make a difference.
